The Ojomo Oluda of Ijebu-Owo Kingdom, Oba Kofoworola Oladoyinbo, has urged Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to issue licenses allowing farmers to carry arms for their protection and to secure their farmlands from herdsmen attacks.

Speaking during the 20th anniversary of his coronation and the launch of his book, ā€œUnderstanding the Essence of Our Persistence: The Story of Our People,ā€ the monarch, a retired military officer, lamented the continuous attacks on farmers by herdsmen in Ondo and across Nigeria. He argued that such incidents might have been prevented if farmers were legally permitted to bear arms.

He stated, ā€œWhile we appreciate the state governmentā€™s efforts in enhancing security, the safety of our farmers is of utmost importance. If herdsmen can freely carry military-grade weapons to protect their livestock, farmers should also have the right to defend themselves and their farms.ā€

The monarch also praised the state governmentā€™s work on supporting traditional institutions but called for increased efforts to eliminate hunger, noting that ā€œpalliatives alone cannot end hunger in the state.ā€

On the issue of protests, Oba Oladoyinbo condemned the use of violence, emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations to achieve desired outcomes.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy Olayide Adelami, commended the monarch for using his royal and military influence to foster the growth and development of the region. He highlighted the strong, mutually beneficial relationship between the state government and traditional rulers, urging continued collaboration for the prosperity of the land.
