The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, has declared an indefinite strike over the federal governmentā€™s failure to fulfill past agreements.

The announcement was made on Tuesday following a union meeting held at its secretariat in Amassoma. According to ASUU, the decision stems from unfulfilled commitments by the government, which the union says are critical to improving the education sector.

Details of the specific grievances and the anticipated impact on academic activities at NDU are expected to emerge in the coming days.

This development comes on the heels of a similar action by the Lagos State University (LASU) chapter of ASUU, which also declared an indefinite strike on Monday. The LASU chapter cited the Lagos State government’s failure to implement a federal government-approved salary increment of 25% and 35% for its members since January 2023.

The strike actions highlight ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s education sector, with both state and federal governments under pressure to address the concerns raised by university staff.
