The Nigerian government has placed hospitals nationwide on high alert following the detection of the XEC COVID-19 variant, which has now spread to 29 countries globally.
First identified in Australia, the XEC variant is a recombinant strain—a hybrid of two pre-existing COVID-19 subvariants. Experts note that it has a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.
In response, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a directive to federal tertiary hospitals, urging them to activate alert systems and monitor for patients with COVID-like symptoms. This directive was conveyed in a letter titled “Letter of Conveyance in Respect of the Newly Detected XEC COVID-19 Strain”, dated December 5, 2024, and signed by Dr. O. N. Anuma, Head of the Teaching Hospital Division, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary.
