Personnel from the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCOS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) have expressed frustration over unpaid promotion arrears and the government’s failure to implement their new salary scales following promotions.
The aggrieved officers called on President Bola Tinubu to investigate the matter, alleging that funds for the payment of their allowances had already been released but remained unpaid.
“While officers in the Federal Fire Service under the same Ministry of Interior have received their promotion arrears and new salary scales, those of us in NCOS, NSCDC, and NIS have been left out,” one officer lamented.
Another officer highlighted the disparity, stating, “In March, Fire Service personnel received two months of rent arrears for January and February 2024, but we are yet to see ours. Our 2023 and 2024 promotion salary scales have also not been implemented, let alone the arrears.”
The personnel also criticized the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for unexplained deductions from their salaries. “With the current economic hardship, officers are suffering. Our monthly salaries are unpredictable due to heavy deductions by IPPIS,” an officer added.
Additionally, they noted that while other paramilitary agencies received three months’ worth of a 25% salary increase earlier this year, the same increment for NCOS, NSCDC, and NIS personnel remains unpaid.
The officers have urged President Tinubu to intervene promptly, warning that the worsening welfare conditions in their agencies could escalate if left unaddressed.
