The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has advised military personnel nearing retirement to live within their means and avoid extravagant lifestyles.
Speaking through Maj.-Gen. Tonye Numbere at the 2025 Veterans Affairs Pre-Retirement Seminar in Lagos, Oluyede highlighted challenges faced after service, such as reduced income, poor financial planning, and the loss of military structure.
He emphasized the importance of proper guidance, financial discipline, and skill development, noting that the training would equip personnel for entrepreneurship and a smooth transition to civilian life.
Oluyede reaffirmed his commitment to soldier welfare through revamped support packages under his “Soldier First” philosophy, and urged retiring personnel to be agents of peace and contribute positively to their communities.
The seminar, themed “Building Resilience of Personnel/Veterans for Thriving in Post-Retirement Life,” runs from Aug. 3–5 at the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Administration, Apapa, Lagos.
