The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Correspondents’ Chapel, Ekiti State Council, has recognized outstanding individuals whose contributions continue to shape communities and drive societal development.
At its award ceremony held in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, dignitaries including Olayinka Oyebode, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Ekiti State, and Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, Adviser on Information, joined several other top government functionaries to celebrate the awardees.
Among those honoured were Senator Babafemi Ojudu; HRM Oba Ademola Ajakaye, the Oluyin of Iyin Ekiti; philanthropist Harrison Niyi Alonge; and Dr. (Barr.) Olumuyiwa Adu (popularly known as Cubana), a Senatorial hopeful under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State.
Dr. Adu received the Merit Award as Political Icon of the Year, in recognition of his contributions to the welfare of the people and his commitment to the promotion of democracy.
The honour, coming from a politically vibrant state like Ekiti, further highlights the Oil and Gas magnate’s growing influence—extending beyond Ondo State—while acknowledging his legal and military background as assets to leadership.
In his remarks, Dr. Adu commended the infrastructural strides of the Ekiti State Governor and expressed deep appreciation to the NUJ and the people of Ekiti for the recognition. He also used the occasion to call attention to the difficult working environment and socio-economic challenges faced by journalists, emphasizing their critical role as the “voice of the people.”
“Those in power are merely trustees of the people’s commonwealth, not owners,” he admonished. “They must manage it responsibly for the benefit of the citizens.”
Dr. Adu further encouraged individuals of means to consistently give back to society, reminding all that “every action will one day be accounted for before our Creator.”
The NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel expressed gratitude for Dr. Adu’s support to the body and pledged continued collaboration with him in his future political engagements.
