Subomi and Wahab Okoya, sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, have been summoned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for questioning over alleged abuse of the naira.
The summons follows a viral video showing the brothers spraying naira notes at a public event, an act prohibited under Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
In response to the incident, Subomi issued a public apology, attributing his actions to ignorance of the law. Writing on his X account, he said:
“To the Nigerian people, my actions were not intended to cause harm or trouble. My intentions were pure and naive. I ask for your forgiveness and support as I had no intention to raise alarm. I wasn’t fully aware of the consequences of my action.”
Despite the apology, the EFCC, in a letter signed by Michael Wetkas, acting director of its Lagos directorate, instructed Subomi and Wahab to appear before the head of the Special Operations Team at the agency’s office on 15A, Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, by 10 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025.
