Dele Farotimi, detained since early December, continues to assert his innocence in the defamation case involving Afe Babalola (SAN). His lawyer, Tope Temokun, has clarified that Farotimi never authorized Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to mediate, seek an out-of-court settlement, or offer an apology on his behalf.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Temokun discussed Farotimi’s prosecution over his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, which alleges judicial corruption involving Babalola. He emphasized that the legal battle transcends personal interests, framing it as a broader quest for justice.
Temokun explained that Peter Obi’s recent visits to Ado-Ekiti—meeting both Afe Babalola and Farotimi in detention—sparked speculation about potential negotiations. Seeking clarity, Temokun visited Farotimi in the correctional facility to discuss the situation.
According to Temokun, Farotimi dismissed any suggestion that he had sent Obi or anyone else to negotiate or apologize. “If anyone who knows my principles believes I would beg anyone or send someone to do so, I would be deeply disappointed,” Farotimi reportedly said.
Farotimi insisted he had no control over Obi’s movements and stressed that his priority remains justice for all parties involved. He reiterated that his book contains no lies, describing the backlash as a battle against truth.
Temokun concluded, “He [Farotimi] is confident he will have the last laugh. His determination is a testament to his belief in justice and the truth.”
The case highlights critical concerns about judicial integrity and freedom of expression in Nigeria.
