A devastating midnight fire has razed properties worth millions of naira at the popular market in Igede Ekiti, located in the Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji has condemned the looting of traders’ goods during the incident, describing it as an act of “wickedness.” Represented by the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Monisade Afuye, during an on-the-spot assessment of the scene, Oyebanji vowed to prosecute those responsible for the looting.

The governor assured the victims of government intervention, noting that the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been directed to evaluate the losses and provide relief materials to the affected traders.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical spark due to high voltage. Governor Oyebanji emphasized the importance of safety precautions and advised residents to switch off electrical appliances before leaving their shops or homes at night.

Efforts are underway to restore normalcy to the area as victims await government assistance to rebuild their businesses.
