Dr. Doyin Okupe, a prominent Nigerian physician and politician, has passed away at the age of 72. Okupe, who served as a senior aide to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, died on March 7, 2025, after battling cancer.

Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Okupe co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre before venturing into politics. He was the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and later became a governorship aspirant in Ogun State under the Peopleā€™s Democratic Party (PDP). In 2012, he was appointed Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.

In October 2023, Okupe was hospitalized for prostate cancer and was flown to Israel for treatment. Despite medical interventions, his condition deteriorated, leading to his demise.

Okupeā€™s death has elicited reactions from political figures and supporters. Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described his passing as a ā€œpersonal loss,ā€ highlighting Okupeā€™s significant role in Nigeriaā€™s political landscape.
