Many Igbo-owned shops in Akure, Ondo State, were closed on Monday as traders joined the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.
The shutdown affected major areas like Oyemekun Road, Arakale, Oba Adesida Road, and Old Garage. The traders closed their shops to show support for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, who has been in detention since his arrest in Kenya and return to Nigeria in 2021.
Though the main protest took place in Abuja, the impact was felt in Akure. Some shop owners said they were willing to sell privately despite the closures.
The protest caused low business activity across the city and affected nearby businesses like food vendors. Security officers were seen patrolling key areas to maintain peace.
