Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed the release of a man sentenced to death by hanging in 2010 for stealing a fowl.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the governor instructed the state’s attorney general to intervene and include the man in the prerogative of mercy list before the year ends.
“Osun is a land of justice and equity. We must ensure fairness and protect the sanctity of life,” Governor Adeleke said. He also emphasized the urgency of addressing the case, describing it as a priority for his administration.
The move follows an appeal from the man’s parents, who pleaded for clemency after over a decade of his incarceration. Governor Adeleke assured the public of his commitment to fairness, promising the matter would receive his personal attention.
The case has drawn attention as an example of excessive sentencing for minor offenses, with many calling for reforms in the judicial system.
