Atsi Kefas, sister to Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, was accidentally shot by a police officer during an attack by gunmen on Thursday. The incident occurred along Kente Road in Wukari Local Government Area, where the governor’s mother, Jumai Kefas, and Atsi Kefas were traveling.
Reports indicate that the gunmen ambushed the family’s convoy, prompting a commotion. In the ensuing chaos, a police escort attempting to repel the attackers accidentally shot Atsi Kefas.
According to security expert Zagazola Makama, the attack happened in a region increasingly plagued by bandit activity.
Fortunately, the swift intervention of security forces prevented further harm. Troops rescued Jumai and Atsi Kefas, evacuating them to safety using an air ambulance. Atsi was rushed to the hospital for treatment, though her current condition remains unknown.
The authorities recovered the vehicle used during the attack, which contained an empty magazine and passenger luggage. Investigations into the incident are ongoing as concerns over rising insecurity in the region grow.
