The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed plans to unveil new tariff plans for the telecommunications industry by December 13, 2024.
This update was disclosed by the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Maida Waida, during an interactive session in Abuja. Represented by the Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, Dr. Waida explained that the revised date replaces an earlier scheduled announcement set for October 27, 2024.
“The new tariff plans have been finalized with input from stakeholders. To streamline options for consumers, operators will now be limited to a maximum of seven tariff plans,” he said.
Dr. Waida noted that the initiative aims to bring relief to telecom consumers and address misconceptions surrounding data and airtime usage. He added that the commission has been actively engaging the public through advertisements and advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about the new measures.
Addressing complaints about data depletion, the NCC stated that it had conducted thorough investigations. Operators were mandated to involve reputable audit firms, which concluded that consumer concerns about data depletion often stem from misconceptions.
“Data usage varies across different Android devices, and we have been educating consumers to help them understand these differences,” Dr. Waida explained.
As part of its regulatory updates, the NCC has also directed telecom operators to update their contact details by January 9, 2025. This directive is part of the commission’s broader efforts to enhance regulatory processes, improve oversight, and strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
