Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has introduced tough penalties for land-related crimes, including 21 years in prison for illegal property resale and 10 years for land grabbing.
Speaking at the inauguration of the State Task Force on Property Protection in Akure, the governor vowed to combat land-related offenses, calling land a vital community heritage.
He condemned rising land disputes and illegal sales, often linked to “Omo-Onile” practices.
Under the new law, offenders face:
- 21 years for unlawful resale,
- 10 years for land grabbing,
- 7 years for breaking real estate laws,
- 5 years or ₦5m fine for illegal occupation,
- 2 years for collecting illegal levies.
Aiyedatiwa praised the House of Assembly and legal team for the law’s passage and urged the Task Force to enforce it strictly. Key members of the Task Force include top state officials, police, civil society, and Amotekun leaders.
The law was signed in December 2024, following an executive order targeting land grabbing.
