The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation into a shocking case involving the alleged sale of a family property and the exhumation of corpses by one of the deceased’s children.
The suspect, identified as Rauf Mutiu Okunola, reportedly sold the family home of the late Pa Azeez Rauf, located in the Dada Estate area of Osogbo, without the consent of his siblings. He is also accused of exhuming the remains of their parents, which were buried on the property.
The incident has sparked a bitter dispute among the children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Azeez Rauf. One of the siblings, Mrs. Adedoyin Rukayat, alleged that Mutiu acted unilaterally, selling the house and removing the corpses without notifying the rest of the family, which includes herself, Fatimo, Khadijat, Teslim, and Qouadr Rauf.
The controversy came to light after Rukayat discovered the property had been sold. She reported the matter to the Dada Estate Police Station on December 31, 2024, leading to Mutiu’s arrest.
Police intervened at the scene and reportedly stopped further exhumation of their mother’s remains, as the body of the late Azeez Rauf had already been removed. Authorities directed that both corpses be reburied at their original gravesites on the property.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Osun State Command, CSP Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the incident. She stated that Mutiu was arrested and later granted bail, as the offences are considered bailable.
Opalola added that the case is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID). Efforts are ongoing to resolve the matter, and if an amicable solution cannot be reached, the case will be taken to court.
The incident has left many in the community shocked, highlighting the devastating impact of family disputes over inheritance. Investigations continue.
