Several prospective corps members mobilized for the Nigerian National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) 2024 Batch B stream, who were later reassigned to Batch C, are reportedly stranded after being denied registration at orientation camps.
One of the affected individuals reported that approximately 40 graduates faced this issue at the Lagos orientation camp. Speaking to the press on Monday, she said, “I tried contacting you regarding a human rights issue involving the NYSC.
Many prospective corps members are stranded in their assigned states with no money to return home, and the NYSC has provided no assistance. We received our call-up letters as late as Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and some even on Sunday. I received mine on Thursday, traveled to camp on Saturday, only to be sent back home after spending a lot on transportation. We are over 40 in the Lagos camp, just waiting around, hoping for a solution.”
A video circulating on TikTok shows some of the affected graduates accusing the Kebbi Orientation Camp management of mistreatment. “We couldn’t even complete our registration, and they didn’t provide us with food for a week.
They just told us to go back home. I spent my own money to get here, and now I have to use my money to return,” lamented one graduate in the video.
Another graduate posted to Niger State shared a similar experience: “This morning, they told us to go back home. Some of us don’t have money. I traveled from Edo State, and now they’re sending us back.”
Attempts to obtain an official response from the NYSC were unsuccessful. The agency’s former spokesperson, Eddy Megwa, recently retired, and the acting spokesperson, Mrs. Carol Lembu, has yet to comment.
