The Federal Government has reassured Nigerians that the Tax Reform Bill currently under consideration in the National Assembly aims to simplify tax administration and shield low-income earners from excessive tax burdens.

Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), disclosed this during a press briefing in Osogbo. Represented by Olubukola Olorunfemi, the agency’s Director of Report Coordination and Improvement, Issa-Onilu explained that the proposed reforms address the longstanding issue of multiple taxation in Nigeria.

ā€œThe Tax Reform Bill includes four key legislations: the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill. These are aimed at streamlining tax policies and procedures,ā€ he stated.

He further noted that the Nigeria Tax Bill seeks to consolidate existing tax laws by repealing 11 outdated laws, creating a more efficient framework for tax imposition and collection.

Issa-Onilu emphasized that the reforms are designed to ease the burden on low-income earners. ā€œPeople earning very little will pay minimal or no taxes, helping them manage their finances better. The government is also working to eliminate duplicate taxes imposed by different authorities,ā€ he said.

To enhance transparency and efficiency, new digital systems will be introduced, simplifying tax payments and ensuring accountability. ā€œThese systems will make tax payments easier, faster, and more transparent. Revenue generated will be reinvested in critical public services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure,ā€ he added.

The Director-General highlighted the broader goal of creating a fair and equitable tax system, ensuring that all Nigerians contribute appropriately to national development while reducing the tax burden on hardworking citizens.

ā€œThese reforms will promote economic growth, improve the ease of doing business, and ensure citizens see tangible benefits from their contributions,ā€ Issa-Onilu concluded.

The government expressed optimism that the Tax Reform Bill would foster economic growth, simplify taxation, and create a fairer system for all Nigerians.
