A Nigerian soldier is facing disciplinary measures following the tragic death of a commercial bus driver near a military checkpoint in Akunnu, Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident happened on Sunday, October 13, 2025, when a commercial bus travelling from Akure to Abuja broke down near the checkpoint. Tensions reportedly flared when some passengers, frustrated by the delay, demanded a refund of their fares. In the heat of the moment, one passenger approached a nearby soldier for help.
According to reports, the soldier responded in a manner described by military authorities as “unprofessional and uncouth.” A confrontation followed, and the situation escalated into a physical altercation with the driver.
In a statement released by the Headquarters of the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure, the Army condemned the soldier’s actions, stating they violated the military’s Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct.
The injured driver was quickly taken to a nearby hospital with the Army covering all medical costs. He was later referred to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital in Akure, and then to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo. Sadly, he passed away the next day, on Monday, October 14.
Expressing deep regret, Major Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, said the Army is committed to ensuring justice is served.
“The Nigerian Army, as a disciplined and professional institution, deeply regrets this unfortunate incident. The soldier involved will face disciplinary action, and the outcome will be made public,” the statement read.
The Army has since reached out to the late driver’s family and leaders of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ondo State. Officials pledged to cover funeral expenses and offer ongoing support to the grieving family.
The Army also promised to ensure that the driver’s children can continue their education without interruption. A liaison officer has been assigned to maintain close communication with the family throughout the process.
