President Bola Tinubu praised the military for its efforts under his administration, assuring continued support to the armed forces. He emphasized that both the Nigerian people and the military must remain vigilant and proactive in confronting regional and global threats, as well as social challenges.
These comments came as Tinubu asserted that his administration has been attentive to the needs and aspirations of citizens, especially amid the current economic difficulties. His statements followed criticism regarding the government’s failure to reduce the cost of governance, particularly after the recent purchase of a presidential jet reportedly worth $100 million.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of Course 32 at the National Defence College in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, highlighted the progress made by his government in addressing the challenges facing the country. He pointed to the new ₦70,000 minimum wage for workers as a crucial initiative aimed at easing the economic burdens on citizens.
“Our nation is facing numerous socio-economic challenges. As a government, we are deeply aware of our people’s needs and will continue to take proactive measures to support them,” Tinubu said.
He also noted significant strides in addressing these issues, such as the implementation of the new national minimum wage, which benefits both civilian workers and members of the Nigerian armed forces and other security agencies.
Tinubu further highlighted the administration’s efforts to combat crude oil theft, identifying it as a priority for achieving economic stability. He also emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering innovation in the mining sector.
“We are actively working to curb crude oil theft and related issues in the Niger Delta. Our border security forces and other agencies are tasked with addressing these threats swiftly to ensure economic stability.
“Additionally, we are committed to developing a business model that encourages value addition in the mining sector, in partnership with international allies, to harness the sector’s potential for national security and development,” he added.
The President reiterated his support for the military, noting their significant sacrifices and successes in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and safeguarding citizens’ lives and property.
“I am dedicated to ensuring that the Nigerian military is adequately funded and prepared for any challenges that may arise,” he stated.
Tinubu also stressed the need for vigilance and the promotion of democratic values across Africa. “We must remain vigilant and proactive in addressing both regional and global threats, as well as social issues.
“Moreover, we must uphold and advance democratic principles within our nation and across the continent,” he continued.
He urged the graduates to apply their newly acquired skills to tackle security challenges in their respective countries.
