The Ondo State Government has banned the movement of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, around the Government House area in Alagbaka, Akure, with immediate effect.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Muyiwa Ogunyemi, announced the restriction on Tuesday during a media chat with journalists at the NUJ Press Centre in Akure.
Ogunyemi explained that Okada riders would only be permitted to operate towards the Police Officers’ Mess, while the route through First Bank, Alagbaka, would terminate at the Teaching Service Commission area.
He also directed all tricycle and Okada operators around the Post Office area to relocate.
The Special Adviser warned that motorists and other road users who violate traffic lights would be arrested and prosecuted without delay.
He further announced a ban on parking on roads and displaying goods on roadways, urging traders and motorists to comply with the directive to ensure the free flow of traffic.
According to him, the government is taking measures to improve traffic management and make Akure, the state capital, more orderly and accessible.
He added that zebra crossings and speed-limit signs would be installed at strategic locations, particularly around areas with schools, to improve road safety and reduce accidents.
The government therefore urged drivers, Okada riders, tricycle operators and other road users to pay attention to road signs and strictly obey traffic laws.
