Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has inaugurated the clearing of waterways and distribution of life jackets to riverine communities in Ondo State. The event, organized by the State Ministry of Transport, took place at Oil Mill through Ebute Irele in Okitipupa Local Government Area.
Representing the governor, Special Adviser on Transport, Akogun Olugbenga Omole, stated that the initiative aims to protect citizens from potential boat mishaps and promote safe water transportation. The projects will cover four local government areas: Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Okitipupa, and Irele.
Speaking at the event, Omole emphasized the significance of the initiative, noting that it reflects the government’s proactive approach to safeguarding lives and boosting economic activities in the affected communities.
“This initiative would not have been possible without the support and approval of Governor Aiyedatiwa,” Omole remarked. “Today’s activities, including the distribution of life jackets and clearing of waterways, will ensure safer water travel, enhance commerce, and sustain livelihoods in riverine areas.”
He also expressed condolences to states like Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, and Kwara, which have recently experienced waterway accidents, reiterating Ondo State’s commitment to preventing such tragedies.
Leaders of boat operators, including Tosin Adebusoye, Chairman of Oluwa Boys, and Sunday Ijitade, Chairman of the Idepe/Okitipupa branch, commended the initiative. They highlighted how the project would improve their operations, reduce maintenance issues, and boost their income.
Gbayi Semoreorioye, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Empowerment and Job Creation, also praised the operators for their support of the administration, promising continued benefits under Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership.
The event concluded with the official flag-off of the projects, marking a significant step towards safer and more efficient water transportation in Ondo State.
